Termites
build the largest habitats (other than humans), housing millions of termites
in towers up to twenty-five feet tall. Other animals like the mongoose also
share the towers as their habitat.
The
outer layer is composed of a clay-like mixture of soil and saliva while the
inner walls are made of wood and fecal matter.
These
towers take 10 to 50 years to create, but when they are done they have the proper
climatic condition, and provides safety from predators.
They
gather water from underground and spread it with saliva on the interior walls
of the tower. When it evaporates, it removes the heat and cools the inside.
The
interior is subdivided into four categories of rooms: the royal chamber, the
nurseries, storage, and fungus gardens where their food is grown.
