* LEGACY FOREST * > skylar haskard >
The site for Legacy Forest is a forest clearing in Skowhegan, Maine in which I have constructed a greenhouse tunnel (40ft long x 25ft wide x 8ft high). The enclosure is filled with various sculptural forms and spaces for action. The work will result in video, photographs, and finished sculptures that will represent some of the spontaneous forms that have been created by action.
Examples
of these forms would be:-Bloated dirt filled bodies, T-shirt, rain suit etc.
-Rubber gloves filled with plaster
-Flat T-shirt cutouts and other flat props such as decoys, words and Thoreau
head
The project us loosely based upon Walden by Thoreau which has been dissected and used as a visual language with which I aim to present a parodic view of Walden, Thoreau, and lost American idealism; an idealism that is discovered and described by Thoreau through his endeavors with nature and separation from society to solitude in the forest.
The centerpiece of the greenhouse is an uprooted tree turned upside down and elevated precariously above a pit . Beyond the tree is the 'Mulching Room' in which a mulching machine will be suspended over a second pit. Objects will be put through the mulcher and spat out into the pit. Objects to be mulched ? color painted sticks, and flat props Thoreau's head, decoys, and cut out words.
The 'Tree Letterbox' is the other main form. This consists of a smaller uprooted tree with a letterbox cut into the center of its trunk through which objects and flat props will be passed through.
