Susan
will construct a site-specific portrait of an imaginary/ideal western garden
that reflects the botanical elements considered beneficial to our ecological
future. The extreme visual perspective of scanning will reveal the complex forms
concealed in usual views of a garden. The botanical elements selected will reflect
research derived from a range of theoretical perspectives. The botanical images
will allude to nature past, present & future as well as nature represented
through the history of art, photography & the relatively new technology
of scanning.

The
focus of my art has been the exploration of the complex relationship between
the individual & the extraordinary urban environment of the West. It encompasses
explorations of culture vs. nature, public vs. private space, human identification
with landscape & the evidence of history encoded in architecture. The contrasting
NY park versions of this urban exploration are the next step in bringing this
project full circle to the source of its inception. The art usually combines
photographic images with text drawn from a wide range of sources including history,
literature, science, popular culture, journalism, philosophy & testimonies.
